Personality
The first thing that one notice about Jarek is his extreme likability. He is very personable and charming, always soft-spoken and humorous. He has a witty comment to suit every occasion and his lopsided smile has become trademark around Hogwarts. Jarek is the type of man that it’s very hard to dislike though some do manage to do it, finding his dry wit and sarcasm more tiring than appealing. Jarek is generally easy going and laid back in his approach to life but that is not to say that he doesn’t have steel and fire in him; it rest very close to the surface as many a transgressors have found out. He is also extremely vindictive and vengeful, students who have earned his ire often makes complain of being victimized afterwards. They are right. Jarek is not one to forgive and forget; he is more: retaliate and destroy. He goes to extreme lengths to avenge slights, real or perceived, sometimes holding grudges for years making him a very dangerous man.
Jarek is a hedonist at heart. He womanizes, drug abuses, and generally don’t deny himself anything he sees fit to have. He has a special taste for vintage firewhiskey and Dom Perignon champagne. This behavior has proven detrimental to his pocket as his empty vault at Gringotts can show. His monthly pay check is blown so fast that it’s almost a magic trick. If not for his dwelling at Hogwarts Jarek would have probably already been out homeless on the street.
Jarek is also somewhat of an adrenaline junkie. Nothing gives him greater joy in life than blood pumping action. In his youth he translated this crave into a career of professional Dueling but now he satisfies it with very eccentric and hazardous behavior. Snorkeling in the Black Lake, nightly sojourns into the Forbidden Forest to Acromantula hunt, free-running Hogsmeade etc. His antics have seen him become the hero and role model of many of Hogwarts young boys.
Growing up Jarek fell into the stereotypical jock stereotype. He was one of the best Quodpot players during his time and was extremely popular. He had very little interest in academics besides interesting subjects like Transfiguration and Magical Combat. He spent most of his time chasing skirts and partying it up with his friends and he had zero respect for anyone not his circle. He earned a reputation of being dumb muscle, which is very far from the truth. Jarek is highly intelligent and successful at anything he applies himself to. He is also a sound judge of character and possesses great street savvy which has saved his life on more than once occasion. He is also brave to a fault and not afraid of confrontation.
Jarek has more than once proven himself to be untrustworthy. He doesn’t actively go out of his way to betray people but don’t expect him throw himself under the buss for you neither. If spilling your secrets can gain him something precious while keeping them earns him nothing but discomfort expect him to betray you unless you are a very close friend. As he says in his own words, he is always looking out for number one.

History
Jarek was born in Boston Massachusetts to Mr. and Mrs. Burns. It was only after the birth of her child that Selena Burn informed her husband of her magical abilities, hoping to use the boy as an additional anchor. To her surprise Raymond Burns was thrilled to have a witch for a wife finding it the change from his monotonous life of a business manager that he needed. Needless to say that he still loved his wife endlessly and dotted without end on his newborn son.
Growing up Jarek would have the best of both worlds but it didn’t take him long to decide which he liked the best. From an early age Jarek would prove to be fearless. He would awe his friends with daring daredevil feats of snake wrestling and building climbing. He would suffer many minor sprains and fractures but his innate dormant magical power would always surface in mishaps that could prove to be life threatening. One such time was when he was seven and he fell from a three story construction site near to his house that he had been exploring. Instead of smashing into the cement below and breaking every bone in his body and then some he somehow appeared back at the same spot he had tripped. It was his first true sign of magical powers. At the age of twelve a school recruiter arrived at the Burns household to talk to Jarek about the famous Salem Institute. Jarek eagerly jumped at the chance to attend his mother’s old school.
The next eight years would be some of the most glorious of Jarek’s life. From day one he was the man. Though he would struggle through each year earning poor marks except for Transfiguration and Magical Combat (English equivalent of DADA) earning the ire of his parents; he didn’t care because he quickly began one of the most popular boys in the institute. Charming, exciting, and the resident rulebreaking king. By his fourth year he had earned himself a detention record inches thick and was in truth only allowed to continue school through the active outspokenness of his house teacher who spoke for him due to his great Quodpot skills which saw that Webster House remain the undisputed champions for almost five year. In his eighth and final year another teacher would introduce Jarek to the amateur Dueling scene; it would prove to be his true passion. Jarek at once knew that that was his calling.
Right after highschool he would frequent the underground Dueling circuits. Though by no means world class he was talented and he won more than he lost. He soon earned the title Stingray for his slippery way of dodging spells and his quiet ferocity. Soon Jarek would go on to fight professional, winning the Interstate Dueling Championships after a grueling battle with Levan ‘Lighting’ Longworth and earning himself the Golden Wand Award. The future look bright for young Jarek, he was on top of the world. He would continue to win duel after duel earning himself quite a reputation. It was right around this time that Jarek started hanging out with a new group of friends. Some would call them just young kids messing around, most would call them hoodlums. They were certainly dodgy and they would prove to be Jarek’s ruin.
One night after a post match celebration Jarek and his friends high on victory (as well as other substances!) and stone cold drunk decided to participate in a bit of ‘old fashion fun’. Jarek doesn’t remember the exact events of that night, it was all a drunken haze of terrified pain laden screams and laughter, but what he clearly remembers was the next day sitting in the custody of Magical Law Enforcement along with his companions. The four of them were all charged with using the Cruciatus Curse on sentient beings, namely a household of muggles. It was alleged that they had traumatized the youngest of the household, a five year old girl, so much that it was doubtful she would recover even with her memory wiped clean. Knowing full well the repercussions of such actions Jarek felt true fear for the first time in his life.
In the end Selena Burn came through for her son. A minor government official herself she managed to keep Jarek from serving a life sentence by passing through a story that he had been confounded and not responsible for his actions, she also called in every favor she had as well as promising her life away in some more. Her greatest efforts were not enough to completely get the boy off the hook however, instead of life Jarek was merely given a reduced sentence of five years. For Jarek it was hell. If anyone wasn’t cut out for prison it was him. The monotony, the boredom, the restricted freedom was just too much. He almost went mad. He only managed to cling on to his sanity through relentless exercise as well as reading.
But by and by five years would pass and Jarek would be relieve, it was not the happy homecoming he had envision. His father now hated him with a bitter passion, not only for what he had done but because of all she had done to get him out Jarek’s mother had had to flee for she could not pay back all the debts she had incurred. She simply could not do some of things she was being asked to do. Raymond kicked Jarek out of his house blaming him for his wife’s disappearance and charging him to never return. Out of lingering affection for the old man Jarek heeded his wishes. He soon found that that wasn’t the only thing that had changed. The stigma of his actions stayed on him. His coaches and sponsors refused to even see him. His dueling career was officially dead. Indeed he couldn’t get a nice paying job at any decent establishment. He was down on his luck and out of cards. Jarek did the only thing that he could do. He gathered what little gold that he hadn’t squandered on wine women and song and he ran. His home no longer held anything for him. He needed a new setting, a fresh start.
For a while he became a wonderer, turning his magic to robbery and crime to survive, but eventually he found his way to England and naturally to Diagon Alley. Here Jarek found steady employment for awhile as a security wizard at Gringotts. One of the goblin overseers was a fan of American entertainment and had heard of Jarek’s dueling prowess. He was most unconcerned about any allegations of muggle torture and gladly offered him a job. However Jarek was far from happy. Goblins were not the most generous of employers. His scanty paycheck could barely suffice with the type of lifestyle he lived and he was spending more nights hungry than not. It was an ad in the Prophet for a DADA teacher at Hogwarts that changed Jarek’s life. He managed to get the job being completely honest about his past with the then headmaster who proved to be a thoughtful compassionate person. Jarek has now been at Hogwarts for five years and has settled in nicely. The unprecedented regime of Sarafina Salazar after the untimely death of the headmaster has disgruntled him, she was the last person he had expected to get the job, but he has so far kept his opinions to himself.
