A wolf. Back when she was a little girl and her family was still intact her father would read to everyone by the fireside. In all her thirty eight years of life this is the only time she can recall feeling true 'family togetherness.' Because of this literature and novels have been extremely symbolic to her throughout her life.

Surprisingly her greatest desire is to actually get married, have a family, and break the 'cycle of crazies.'

Quite simply: falling into the black pit of depression and taking her own life. Considering her family's history with depression and suicide it really isn't an irrational fear for her to have. Just about everyone on her father's side of the family suffered severe depression leading to suicide or some sort of mental problem.
Personality
When a Hemingway child is born they are cursed with the possibility of leading an entirely poetic, completely torchered, and dark lifestyle. Almost every relative of the late Ernest Hemingway has sort of unusual 'genius' about them. Lillian tries so hard not to carry a dark cloud above her; it has become her life goal not to inherit the inevitable. From the time she was a young woman she has had the impossible task of finding who she is and establishing herself as someone other than a Hemingway, but it has been a very hard job for her and is something that she still struggles with today. At times Lily has aspects of being passionate, dark, and cynical no matter how much she denies herself those traits are essentially bred into her, but if someone looked past the rough interior they would see the true Lillian.
Lily is very sophisticated and classy. Many compare her to the likes of Grace Kelly. Because of this Lily has grown quite accustomed to Princess Grace and considers her her idol and all time favorite actress. Every bit of Lily is elegance right down to her sense of style. The way in which she handles problems is with great patience and tolerance for the opposing side. Many admire her for this rare quality. Sometimes this air of sophistication makes her appear a bit stuck up. This results in people believing she's very prissy, and even a bit 'holier than thou' even though she isn't either of those things.
Aside from being one of the most put together and classic women, Lily is also very intelligent. Her family background itself is impressive, but Lily can truly stand on her own. She is very intuitive and able to draw connections most people can't see. In her spare time she enjoys reading philosophy and testing her own theories on life. Not only is she highly intelligent, but she is also quite the writer. Of all the family members, Lily definitely is the one who got the writing skills from grandfather Ernest.
As a young teen in Hogwarts Lily was often teased. This along with her family's awkwardness at the time caused her to be quite reserved. This is not something that has gone away. Lily simply is not very keen on making relations with other people and much prefers to keep to herself. Some find this odd because she is a teacher. She loves to teach and be around children, but when it comes to her personal life she is definitely not aggressive. In fact Lily's is very self conscious and even a bit insecure.
Ever since her run in with an eating disorder, Lily has done her best to get over it, and she has quite well. Her OCD about eating three square meals a day stems from a fear of her condition surfacing again, and if that happened she'd probably not be able to recover quite as gracefully as she did the first time. Her history with bulimia is a very touchy subject for her, and not very many people know about other than her closest confidantes.

History
Lillian Isabella Hemingway was the first born child to Adrian and Olaya. Before Lily was born, her parents were married at a very young age. Olaya was a beautiful witch who could match the beauty of a part veela. Her family was a pureblood wizarding family of high rank. She got essentially everything anyone could want. When she was only seventeen years old she met Adrian Hemingway the son of Patrick Hemingway and the grandson of Ernest Hemingway. The two fell in love and planned to get married once Olaya turned eighteen. The Fierro family didn't approve of the union and publicly disowned Olaya. Generally, Olaya gave up everything to be with Adrian.
The couple had trouble having children. Olaya had a few miscarriages and eventually grave up all together only finding herself pregnant a year after giving up. The pregnancy lasted and a healthy baby girl came into the world on August the second. For two years Lily was the only child in the family. She was so young she can't even recall those days. On September twenty first Alyssa Hemingway was brought into the world.
From the moment the two sisters were able to communicate it was constant competition. Everything Lillian had, her younger sister also had to have. During the early years of her childhood Lily found this adorable and quite endearing actually. It didn't start getting nasty until the two began their Hogwarts years. Before any of that the Hemingway's appeared to be a normal and very respectable family. Nobody new about the dark past or even that Adrian's beloved wife was a witch. These secrets were guarded. The family's 'blue period' holds some of Lily's fondest memories, such as her father reading the Lord of the Rings to them every night before bed.
Growing up Lily was a daddy's girl. She spent a lot of time watching her father write stories in his study (he was a rather famous author). He told her that the imagination was key in life and if you could dream it it was possible. He taught her how to write and encouraged her to continue writing because she had great talent for it. Olaya didn't particularly care for Adrian promoting such a thing and much preferred for her daughter to be beautiful and vain like herself. Lily's mother constantly criticized her for being interested in books opposed to partying and fashion. Constantly her mother asked her why she wasn't like her sister. This forced a wedge between mother and daughter.
At the age of eleven Lillian got her acceptance letter to attend Hogwarts. She was very happy to be able to get away from her family. The sorting hat pondered putting Lily in Gryffindor for her ability to stand out from the crowd. Eventually, however, the hat decided on Ravenclaw with certainty. Lily considered Hogwarts an escape from reality, a safe haven of sorts away from her family. Of course she wrote letter to her father almost everyday and enjoyed reading early drafts of his novels. Adrian considered Lily his top critic.
During the summer when Lily turned thirteen, a terrible tragedy occurred. The family had been falling apart for years, and Lily's father had been thrown into the inevitable pits of depression that plagued the Hemingway family. Olaya had left with Alyssa, Peter, and the youngest Talia for a picnic out. Lily had gone to the picnic at first, but her mother told her midway to the destination that it wasn't any use and asked her to leave. Lily ran home to her father only to find him overdosed on sleeping pills. She had been with him during his last few minutes of life. His last dying words were 'I'm so sorry.'
Olaya blamed Lily for the death and asked her why she hadn't stopped him. The rest of the summer was ruined by Olaya's nasty remarks about the way Lily looked. Before her father's death she had looked to him for consolation that the things Olaya said to her were not true. Now she slowly started to believe the things Olaya said to her and she even developed a severe condition of bulimia. As she started to lose weight her mother gushed at how pleased she was. No one knew Lily was beginning to go down the same dark path as all the other Hemingway's. The will her father left had been revised days before the suicide and left just about everything to Lily the moment she turned eighteen as well as a package which advised her to wait until she turned eighteen as well to open it. Her mother was angry. Very angry.
Upon return to school Lily did not look well. Her ultimate low was during the year after her father's death. During Christmas she refused to return home for the holidays and stayed at school with the few other students. After the feast one of the professors found her in the bathroom. She helped talk Lily through her problems and managed to mentor her through the rest of the year. Things genuinely started to look up for her and in her fifth year she met and fell in love with Joshua Beckstrom. They were hopelessly in love with each other. They lasted well into Lily's sixth year.
When Lillian turned sixteen she ran away from her family to live with Josh's parents. She left no note or any trace of where she was. It lasted about six months before Olaya figured out where Lily had run away to from Alyssa. Olaya forced Lily to return home. From then on Olaya issued strict rules on how Lily was to conduct herself and expressed her displeasure with Joshua. In secret Alyssa had asked her mother to secure Lily's sweetheart for her. Lily's innocent little sister had a tendency to want what Lily had.
Despite the fact Lil's family was having a meltdown, her grades were nothing short of extraordinary. She was the top witch in her year and in her seventh year was given the title of Head Girl. Her home was truly Hogwarts and she was terrified to leave it after graduation. The moment she turned eighteen she inherited her father's money which was quite a bit considering it was all his life's savings from the profits he made off of his books. Inside of the package was the transcript of an unfinished novel entitled 'casablanca lily' which was about a writer who married a beautiful woman who enchanted him but ended up being a cold and heartless woman. The only light in his life was his daughter who he called the 'casablanca lily.' In her heart Lillian knew the story was about her and that her father wanted her to finish it for him.
For years she holed up in her London apartment to finish the novel. Unfortunately her relationship with Josh was brought to a close with the pressure of her mother and her writing. Eventually the novel was finished, taken to her father's publishing company, and praised. The editors accepted the transcript without hesitation and published the novel. Critics praised the book and called it Adrian Hemingway's greatest work, and explained to the muggle world that Lillian was a talented author to watch. Lily didn't particularly want to be a novelist, so she switched to journalism and opinion pieces. She did well, but nothing compared to her work on "Casablanca Lily."
A good five years after her journalism career her sister announced she was engaged. Lily attended the ceremony in Tinworth (she had been living in muggle London.) She was crushed to find her sister's betrothed to be Josh. It did not take long for her to realize who was behind all of this. Lily left hurt and angry only to find herself on the doorstep of the same professor who had helped her through her eating disorder. She comforted her and told her stories from her own life. Lily began to rebuild for herself and tried to erase Josh from her mind, but when he came to her house on the night before his wedding soaking from the rain...Lily couldn't help herself. The two began a dangerous and risky affair.
At age thirty Lily was offered a position as the Charms Professor at Hogwarts. Lily declined at first. She wanted to rid herself of magic, but eventually she convinced herself that it would be a good idea for her to get re-acquainted with her old life. After a few years of successful teaching she was promoted to Head of Ravenclaw, and eventually she became the Deputy Headmistress. There had been chatter of her possibly becoming Headmistress, but when the offer came on the table she blatantly rejected it. Lily was never one to enjoy leading and taking on huge responsibilities.
For nearly a decade she has been working at the school. Her life has been pretty good and she has managed to overcome her disorder completely. She has promised herself that she will never fall down that path ever again.
