Bess had been out in the Forbidden Forest since breakfast. She had been spending time with the animals, getting to know them. They all seemed to take to her quite nicely. She had always had a way with animals. Something about her just seemed to call to their natural instincts and they flocked, migrated, or otherwise gathered to and around her like she was nectar to a bee. It had always been this way, even when she was growing up as a small girl in the orphanage. She loved the animals and they loved her in return. She treated them kindly and with respect and they respected her in return. It was the relationship they had, the way it had always been.
Bess walked into her classroom just as class was supposed to start, standing back near the door. “Alright, class. Leave your quills and books where they are. You won't be needing them today. Follow me.” She smiled, waiting for all of them to get up from their seats before leading them out of the classroom and down the corridor toward the door. She could hear a lot of the students wondering aloud where they could be going, and she turned to speak with them as she continued to walk backward, just after exiting the castle. “We are going on a field trip. I'd like for you to meet some of my new friends.”
Bess had always been hands on in everything she'd done. She never sat back and just let the books be her guide. She liked to get out in nature and learn that way. Besides, how could one really learn about animals from a book. The only way they'd be able to really learn about animals and get to know them is if she treated them just like people. She had to become their friend. Well, she preferred to make friends with the animals. They had such amazing spirits and they always had more to share than most humans. Most humans didn't open up like animals did, and animals, most of them, didn't speak.
She lead the class toward the Forbidden Forest, not in too deep, but just enough to the spot where she had been earlier, watching the moon frogs. Before coming up to their spot in the forest, Bess turned to ask the students. “Can any one tell me what a moon frog has anyone ever seen one?”
